As we begin the 2016-2017 school year, we would like to remind parents of the importance of school attendance. Students are most successful when they come to school everyday.  These students are more likely to keep up with daily assignments, master concepts, and do well on standardized testing at the end of the school year. Regular school attendance can also help students who are learning English master the language. As a parent, your commitment to school attendance, will send a message to your child that education is important to your family and that school is a responsibility that should be taken seriously. Here's a list of things you can do to limit your child's absences:

  • Get your child to school on time -frequent tardies often lead to frequent absences.
  • Identify sources of anxiety-if your child is reluctant about coming to school, identify the possible causes.
  • Limit the amount of time your child is absent due to medical appointments or illnesses- try to schedule doctor appointments after school and only allow your child to stay home if they have a contagious or severe illness.
  • Plan ahead- schedule family vacations during weekends or during school breaks.
  • Create a restful environment-make sure your child gets plenty of sleep-it ensures that your child is refreshed and ready to go the next morning.

By making school a priority, you will take a critical step in supporting your child's education. Every day counts!
